John 7:53-8:11* (February 10th)
Read John 7:53-8:11.
Do you need to be reminded that we are all sinners, or that God shows you grace in Jesus?
We can be very quick to "cast the first stone" and point out the failings of others. But all of us need mercy from God and so Jesus teaches us to "judge not, or you too will be judged" (Matthew 7:1-5). Some of us will have had our failings painfully exposed, and we doubt that God could ever love us. Sin is serious, but God didn't send Jesus to condemn us, but to save us from sin.
*NB: this passage was not in the original John's gospel, but it is probably a true story about Jesus and illustrates Biblical truth.
Family Bible Time
Do: throw pretend stones at each other (eg. balls of paper) saying ‘you’re a sinner’, ‘no, you’re a sinner!’
Watch: Charles Dickens telling his son the story from the movie King of Kings…
Think: why do the people not stone the woman?
Why does Jesus not stone sinners?
Pray: thank Jesus that he came to save sinners.
