The story behind 'To God be the Glory'
HYMN: The story behind 'To God be the Glory!'
Fanny Crosby (1820 - 1915), the American singer & musician, was blind from the age of six weeks. She married her music teacher, Alexander Van Alstyne, who was also blind. She was a prolific song-writer, and once signed a contract with a publisher to write three songs every week throughout the year. In fact, she wrote thousands during her lifetime. Although American evangelists Moody & Sankey used this hymn on their missions, it did not become an immediate favourite. After Billy Graham featured it in his Harringay crusade in 1954, Londoners were soon singing it on their way home, in streets and busy queues and underground trains. When Dr Graham took it back to the United States & introduced it at his crusade in Nashville, Tennessee, it soon took its place in the group of top favourites hymns.
To God be the glory, great things He hath done, So loved He the world that He gave us His Son, Who yielded His life our redemption to win, And opened the life-gate that all may go in.
Oh, perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, To every believer the promise of God; The vilest offender who truly believes, That moment from Jesus a pardon receives written by Fanny Crosby (1820 - 1915)
Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done, And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; But purer, and higher, and greater will be Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see.
Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice; Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.
