Discussion Questions

First session: Philippians 2v1-18
•Start with going round the group and just sharing something that you each find amazing about all that Christ gave up for us.
•How does Christ's example change our attitude?
•What's the difference between wanting to be a "star" and "shining like stars" as we hold out the word of life? Compare the two and think about why the second is so much better. How could I shine more in the right sort of way?
•What sort of things do I grumble/dispute/argue/complain about? What would I like to ask God to change in my attitude?

Second session: Philippians 2v19-30
•What is my attitude to people who are very demanding of my time and energy? How do the examples in Philippians 2 help me? How can I be more like Jesus (and like these other models in the letter)?
•What are the good ways as women at church we can model joyful service to the next generation and to each other? How are we doing at St John’s?
•What might be our blind spots where we are letting our culture influence us too much, rather than filling our minds with Christ's example?
•Was there anything on which you felt personally challenged that you would like others to pray for?
•Spend time praying together, thanking God for the people who have modelled joyful service to you and praying for each other to be fully lined up with Jesus, Paul, Timothy and Epaphroditus!

Third session: Philippians 3v1-11
•Is there anything that particularly encouraged or challenged you in this section of Philippians? (Go round the group)
•Paul talks about the radical change of seeing his "gains" as a loss and even as a potential handicap(v7-8). How could our heritage or knowledge become unhelpful rather than helpful? Does that mean it's bad to be a "good Christian"? Why/why not?
•Re-read v10-11. What do you understand by the phrase "participation in his sufferings"?  How can a personal relationship with Jesus change the way we face suffering?
•From what we've seen in all of Philippians, try to come up with a description of what Paul means when he says, "To live is Christ" (1v21). What kind of attitude does it entail? (Towards Christ and others)
•Share one thing you each want to remember or put into practice from today.
•Pray for each other around the table or in pairs.

Planning your Visit

Welcome from the VicarRevd. Peter Breckwoldt

Let me welcome you to St John’s! I am so delighted you have found our web site. We are a Church family in Wimborne for anyone living, working or studying around this area. Whoever you are, whatever your age, whether you’re an experienced Christian or not, we would love you to join us.

From an intrigued onlooker to the committed follower we are keen that everyone should grow in relationship with God through knowing Jesus. To help us do that our emphasis is on hearing God speak to us by his Holy Spirit through his word, the Bible. Each of us knows that we only grow in a relationship with someone and get to know them when we spend time listening to them and responding and reacting to what they say. So the focus of St John’s is on listening to God’s word, talking to him in prayer and taking up all that he says.

The Church family here at St John’s longs to help anyone who wants to investigate the life of Jesus. On this site you will find people, meetings, talks and events shaped to help you take another step forward in finding out more about God and his love for us in Jesus, and to help you get linked into the church family life.

I do hope I will have the opportunity to meet you personally in the very near future and that you will quickly feel at home at St John’s.

Revd. Peter Breckwoldt
